Mobile, Alabama – Bishop State Community College’s Culinary Arts Program is partnering with the USA Mitchell Cancer Institute as they embark upon a culinary medicine program. The mission of the program is to “Vanquish Cancer through Transformative Research, Education, and Health Care” according to Dr. Michael Finan, Director of the USA Mitchell Cancer Institute. Chef Gabrielle Wilson, Program Coordinator for the Commercial Food Service’s Division at Bishop State is helping to teach a group of community stakeholders how to prepare healthy meals. The goal of the program is to promote healthy eating so that it will have a direct impact on cancer and other diseases.

A presentation was given at Bishop State to participants about healthy eating habits during the first in the series of culinary medicine classes. Chef Wilson along with others involved in the pilot program led this effort. The community stakeholders were then paired up and each team prepared a meal using a variety of selected ingredients. Chef Wilson guided the teams through the process of preparing a nutritious meal using proper culinary skills. The program was first held on the Carver Campus of Bishop State Community College on July 12, 2016. It was the first in a series of culinary medicine courses that will be taught in the community. Bishop State is proud to be a partner with the USA Mitchell Cancer Institute with this initiative. The college prides itself on educating both students and the community as a whole, and this partnership does just that.

The second in the series of culinary medicine courses will be held on Tuesday, July 19, 2016 from 5:30 pm-7:30 pm at the Carver Campus of Bishop State Community College. Other members of the community have been invited to participate in the program. The culinary class is not open to the public but only to invited participants. The program will be held in the culinary kitchen on the Carver Campus of Bishop State located at 414 Stanton Road, Mobile, AL 36617.
