Students will learn the fundamentals of electricity as well as math and science knowledge needed to work on power lines. There will also be an emphasis on working safely.

The program is housed at a newly-renovated building on Bishop State’s Southwest campus in Mobile. It includes three classrooms as well as a learning laboratory and an outdoor hands-on learning area where lineworkers can hone their skills.

Students who complete the required 9-week course will graduate with a commercial driver’s license (CDL), CPR certification, OSHA 10 card, as well as other certificates provided by Alabama Power. Upon graduation, participants will be eligible for entry-level jobs with utility companies across the Gulf Coast and beyond.

The nine-week lineworker training program was set to begin training its second round of future lineworkers in June 2020. However, the class was canceled due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Potential students who have questions or would like to learn more about the program should contact the Daphne Stamps at (251) 665-4130 or dstamps@bishop.edu.
