Bishop State Community College has had a jam packed start to 2018, but few weeks have been as exciting as our 2018 Homecoming week. This year homecoming coincided with the first week of school so students, faculty and staff started the year off with a BANG! Click here to see a recap of Homecoming 2018 On Tuesday, January 9, Bishop State men’s and women’s basketball teams played Coastal Alabama South in their first conference game of the year. Both the women and men used their home court advantage to bring home the victory! The Lady Wildcats won 60-46 and the men dominated as well with a final score of 70-64. Way to go Wildcats!
Homecoming festivities continued Thursday, January 11 with the annual Faculty vs. Students basketball game. It was a battle to see if Bishop State faculty members still had their skills on the court, or if our students would send them back to the drawing board. It was a highly competitive game with neither side giving up easily. The game first ended with the score tied up, but that wasn’t good enough for our players. More time was added to the clock… but to no avail. Even after going into overtime, the game still ended in a tie 86-86. Great job to the students and faculty who participated and the crowd who came out to cheer them on!
Later that night the court remained hot for the Alumni game. Bishop State alumni came out to shoot some hoops. Athletic Director and women’s head basketball coach Trent Eager took a moment to recognize each alumnus, their time spent at Bishop and the accomplishments since leaving the college.
All of the homecoming activities lead up to the first-ever Bishop State Fan Frenzy Tailgating Experience on Saturday, January 13. The college invited the entire community to come out and join students, faculty and staff for free delicious food, lots of fun, and music provided by 107.3 The Beat live on campus. It was a beautiful day, despite the cold wind, but that didn’t stop the fun and excitement of Homecoming. The Tailgating Experience continued until the women’s basketball game began at 2 p.m. The Lady Wildcats played the Wallace-Selma Patriots and came out on top 80-74. The men hit the court following the women, but were defeated by the Patriots in the Homecoming game 82-69.
Of course Homecoming wouldn’t be complete without the crowning of the 2018 Homecoming King and Queen. Clarence Brown was crowned the 2018 Homecoming King and Jasmine Steele was crowned the 2018 Homecoming Queen. Ashley Burrell, Danielle Walton and Jakayla Dubose were named the 1st, 2nd and 3rd runners up respectfully.
In the end, Bishop State Homecoming 2018 was a success! President Reginald Sykes told faculty and staff all of the Homecoming events exceeded his expectations. Dr. Sykes said he was “very excited to see many Bishop State family members, past and present, taking part in the activities” and showing off their school spirit. Keep an eye out next year for Bishop State’s Homecoming events and be sure to join us! We are playing an active role in our community because, after all, we are MOBILE’S community college!
