Monica Beasley
Monica Beasley[/caption] The artwork of our newly hired adjunct instructor, Monica J. Beasley, is currently on display at the Mobile Museum of Art. The exhibition, a first for Beasley, will remain there through March 2019. Beasley attributes much of her passion for art to her loving mother, Geneva (Cromwell) and her many cherished family members. Three of the works in her exhibition are titled and dedicated to three of her aunts. Beasley says, “While this exhibition does not encompass all of my work in my career,it will at least open a small window into my world.” Beasley recalls her Mom would bring her and her siblings to the museum every Sunday after mass. Beasley recalls having the museum in their life brought them a sense of normalcy. She recently had the opportunity to pay it forward and honor her mom by taking her to Paris to visit museums. Beasley has been an educator in the Mobile County Public School System since 1995. In 2016, she received the STAR travel grant from The University of Alabama at Huntsville. The Success Through Academic Research (STAR) Project provides Alabama teachers (P-12) an opportunity to engage in an independent study program to enhance their understanding of the classroom subjects they teach. Beasley was awarded the opportunity to study in the footsteps of her favorite artist, Romare Bearden, as he traveled to Paris to study Matisse and other collage artists. Throughout her art career, Beasley has explored concepts of femininity, home, marriage, family, race, and Southern culture. She works in multiple mediums from photography and conceptual work to painting and collage. Beasley’s use of tactile materials and bright colors are deeply rooted in serious subject matter. Presently, she is using Mardi Gras train remnants from a great friend, Johnny Weaver of Royal Clothiers. Beasley says the greatest way she can honor Mobile is to share her love of the city with the world. See Beasley's artwork now through March 28, 2019 at the Mobile Museum of Art.
