Online. Remote. Hybrid. What does it all mean?
One of the top questions we are getting from students is “Will all classes be online this fall?” Some students are not ready to be in large groups or have loved ones with underlying medical conditions and would rather have online classes. Other students prefer to meet and see with their instructor and want some classes to be held face-to-face. Bishop State has come up with a plan that will keep students safe while not compromising the quality of classroom instruction. Below is an explanation of the ways classes will be taught this fall.
ACADEMIC COURSES
ONLINE
In online courses, students will receive instruction and assessment via the internet through Canvas LMS with deadlines for submission of work. Students are not required to come to campus and may study and access instruction at their convenience. Access to a computer with high-speed internet, speakers, webcam, and a microphone and a government-issued photo ID is required. At least 25% of the final grade will be determined by proctored assignments.
HINT: When looking at the schedule, classes taught in this format will be labeled as an "online" class.
NOTE: Chromebooks and phones are NOT functional for some assessments/activities in this course.
REMOTE
In remote classes, students will receive instruction via the internet through Canvas LMS with class sessions held during the days and times listed. Students are expected to participate in these remote learning sessions. Specific details and directions for this course will be conveyed to students by the instructor through Canvas LMS. Students are not required to come to campus. Access to a computer with high-speed internet, speakers, webcam, and a microphone and a government-issued ID is required. At least 25% of the final grade will be determined by proctored assessments.
HINT: When looking at the class schedule posted online, you will not see the word "remote" used to describe this type of class. It will be listed as a "hybrid" class. Please be sure to look at the descriptions of your class where available.
NOTE: Chromebooks and phones are NOT functional for some assessments/activities in this course.
HYBRID
In hybrid classes, students will receive instruction over the internet via Canvas LMS and complete labs and/or assessments on campus at scheduled times. Students will be required to be on the campus for portions of the class. Access to a computer with high-speed internet, speakers, webcam, and a microphone and a government-issued ID is required. At least 25% of the final grade will be determined by proctored assessments.
HINT: Any class/course that has a lab or a hands-on component will meet face-to-face in this hybrid format. When looking at the class schedule posted online, classes taught in this format will be labeled as a "hybrid" class. Please be sure to look at the descriptions of your class where available.
NOTE: Chromebooks and phones are NOT functional for some assessments/activities in this course.
TECHNICAL COURSES
Most technical courses will be taught in a modified hybrid format. Theory portions/courses will primarily be delivered over the internet via Canvas LMS while lab portions/courses will be taught on campus with students alternating days and times as determined by the instructor. Contact the instructor via email for specific details and review your course syllabus once enrolled. Access to a computer with high-speed internet, speakers, webcam, and a microphone and a government-issued ID is required. At least 25% of the final grade will be determined by proctored assessments.
NOTE: Chromebooks and phones are NOT functional for some assessments/activities in this course.
PROCTORED ASSESSMENTS
Proctored assessments are required for proof of student identity. For proctored assessments, a student
is required to present a government-issued photo ID and be monitored (videoed or in the presence of an
approved proctor). Instructors will identify methods of proctoring available on the syllabus of the course. These may include the following:
1. On-campus assessment: An assessment will be given during a published proctored assessment meeting.
2. Off-campus, proctored assessment: Students who live more than 50 miles from the Main campus may use a proctor who has been approved by the instructor of the course, following the appropriate proctoring guidelines. Completed proctor forms must be submitted to faculty by midterm of the semester. All costs (if any) associated with procuring a proctor fall upon the student. The College may use Respondus Monitor through Canvas to administer the exam. Respondus Monitor activates a student’s webcam and records video and audio of the student taking the exam so it can be proctored remotely. Thus, the student is responsible for procuring a computer with a webcam and microphone that is compatible with Canvas and Respondus.
