Bishop State Community College’s Commercial Vehicle Driving Course is an eight-week program that will help you develop the necessary skills needed to obtain a CDL Class A license.

The program is designed to provide students an opportunity to acquire the basic skills, knowledge, and fortitude to become entry-level employees in the commercial truck driving field. The curriculum is based on the Department of Transportation Model Program for Truck Driving Training. Upon successful completion of the program, the student will be able to obtain a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL), operate a tractor-trailer unit, and be knowledgeable of the rules and regulations of the trucking industry.

Now is the perfect time to consider truck driving as a career! If you have always wanted to be a truck driver, or if you are looking to transition to a new career after being in the workforce for a while, Bishop State Community College can provide the training and testing you need.


The CDL Training class provides driver license testing information and training for drivers who wish to have a commercial driver’s license (CDL – Class A or B) and endorsements P, T, N, and X. This course will also provide information on federal regulations and requirements for the state’s standards for the licensing of commercial drivers.


Things to Know

  • Funding is available through the Alabama Career Center, Sallie Mae loan, Alabama Rehabilitation, and the GI Bill. All funding options are based on eligibility
  • 280 Hours / 8 weeks or until you can complete all material.
  • Day Classes are Mon-Thursday from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.
  • Weekend classes are Thursday and Friday nights from 5 p.m. to 11 p.m. plus Saturday and Sunday from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.
  • Hands-on training in a team environment
  • Manual and automatic vehicles for a Class A or B
  • Recruiters available to discuss job opportunities
  • Price of Training: $2640.00


Admission Requirements

Admissions requirements for entry into the CDL Truck Driving training program are

  1. Must be at least 18 years of age or older
  2. Possess a good driving record (MVR) and
  3. Be able to successfully pass a Department of Transportation (DOT) physical examination and DOT controlled substance test (chain of custody drug screen).


Required Documents

The following documents are required before you begin training:

  1. A valid driver's license
  2. CDL permit with endorsements you will want
  3. Social Security Card
  4. Motor Vehicle Report ( www.alabamadl.alea.gov )
  5. DOT Physical
  6. Drug Screen Results

Students must apply for the college at www.bishop.edu or go to Bishop State's Downtown Campus located at 351 North Broad Street; Mobile AL 36603 and complete a new student application to get your A-number. This will be your student number. You will sign up for STC-Truck Driving. Everyone should sign up as a first-time student (New Student), even if you have attended Bishop State in the past. You will not need a transcript or go to a new student orientation. Books and other out-of-pocket expenses are not included in the price of tuition.


NOTE: The long-form physical, DOT drug screen, and motor vehicle report (MVR) must be dated within 30 days of the first scheduled class day.
*Effective February 7, 2020, Alabama allows individuals ages 18-20 to apply for a Class A CDL for intrastate driving only. These students will be:

  1. Limited to Class A & B CDL only
  2. No hazmat or passenger endorsements
  3. Prohibited from operating oversized or specially configured loads requiring a permit from ALDOT
  4. Limited to commercial driving within the State of Alabama only (intrastate)
